What are five words that describe you/your brand?

Dependable, creative, bright, efficient, and energetic.

How/when did you enter the industry?

I entered the industry in 2016, first working as a intern for another makeup artist while also taking on a few gigs on the side mostly doing photoshoot makeup for various photographers in DFW.

What should a bride look for when shopping around for a HMUA?

When looking for a HMUA for your wedding day, you should really first determine your personal style. For example, you may love the look of dramatic makeup on others, however, for yourself you might prefer a natural look.  After you determine your style, you should look for someone with a good reputation,  reviews, solid portfolio and someone who is willing to take the time to get to know you and your personal style.  Always remember if the price seems too good to be true, it most likely is.

What can a bride expect to pay?
A bride should expect to pay anywhere around $275-$575 for their own hair and makeup and anywhere from $125-$200 per person for the bridal party. I get asked quiet a bit why the bride’s cost is higher than everyone else's and that is because of the time and detail it takes to handle the bride and bridal party. A good makeup artist will speak to their bride several times prior to the event date to ensure they understand the bride’s wants and needs on their big day. In addition, the lead makeup artist is ultimately responsible for the entire bridal party even if their assistants are the ones working on the bridesmaids.

What is something you wish brides knew before booking a hair and makeup artist?

I wish more brides understood that ultimately you get what you pay for.  I’ve had many brides contact me the day of their wedding upset and crying that their makeup artist canceled on them last minute. This has become a recent issue as social media has made it easier to locate what I like to call  “fake up artists”. A “fake up artist” is someone who is not professional but offers services for lower prices. In addition to risking a no call no show, you are also risking hygienic and sanitary type issues as they most likely did not invest in any proper training on disinfecting their kit. Another red flag would be if your makeup artist does not provide a written contract or have standard rates.

Why should a bride hire a professional instead of doing it themselves?

Well, the reason is really simple. An industry professional is trained on techniques to highlight your best features and also disguise possibly less flattering features. It is just a myth that brides have a natural glow on their wedding day and the makeup artist is the secret recipe behind the “glow”.

MELISSA CLAIRE PHOTOGRAPHY | MOST LOVED

Meet Melissa, the newest Coterie member and our most recent MOST LOVED!! We met Melissa at a Knot networking event over 2 years ago when Celebrate Dallas was just starting to set it roots in the community. She was wearing a black dress covered in constellations and planets and we just knew we'd found a kindred creative spirit in the sea of Dallas vendors.

Read all about her photography journey and get to know Melissa a little more intimately on today's episode of CELEBRATE DALLAS' MOST LOVED!

What are five words (or a five word sentence that would describe you and/or your company the best?

Bold. Loving. Free-Spirited. Candid. Colorful.

How did you get into photography? Was it always weddings?

I always knew I wanted to spend my life and career taking photos, so I studied fine art photography and received my Bachelor's Degree in 2010. After graduation, I honestly wasn't sure *what* exactly to do with my future. Luckily, a few wonderful photographers gave me guidance and let me shadow them at weddings, and I started second shooting a lot. I fell in love with weddings and am always grateful to have found a career that is both creative and service based!

What’s your favorite moment of the wedding day to photograph?

Getting ready. From styling the details to capturing the candid anticipation of the day (even for myself), the first part of the day is a chance to slow down and be fully present while the rest of the wedding day is a joyful whirlwind. Another favorite is definitely the romantic bride and groom portraits!

Have any tips for the camera shy brides and grooms out there?

Trust your photographer, and trust the process. It's our job to provide coaching/guidance and walk into any situation with confidence and direction!  Additionally, I would encourage brides and grooms to hire a photographer they like personally as we're right there with them the entire day.

What’s your favorite local hangout?

I'm such a homebody, but I do love a good art exhibit! I'm always up for cocktails at Paschall's in Denton. And you can also find me at local music shows, since Nick (my husband and wonderful second shooter) plays in two Fort Worth based bands: Lindby and The Hendersons!

1. What are five words (or a 5 word sentence) that would describe you and/or your company the best?
Romantic. Undone. Effortless. Braids. Natural.

2. How’d you get into the hair styling game?
I actually started hair school when I was 16 years old. After working in a full-service salon for many years I realized I loved the styling part the most.  I’ve always been fascinated by how much someone can change their appearance just from their hair.

3. How should a bride decide what look she wants?
Choose something you know you will feel comfortable in. If you do not like your hair up and away from your face in everyday life, chances are you will probably not like it on your wedding day.

4. Have any tips for keeping the “getting ready” process stress-free on the wedding day?
Have your bridesmaids look at styles ahead of time instead of the morning of, and make a timeline for their hair/makeup services.

5. What is your favorite local hangout?
People’s Last Stand in Dallas! I love the atmosphere, as well as their Devil’s Advocate.

MOST LOVED | SHAY & OLIVE

Happy Wednesday babes!! We're so frickin' excited to introduce you to one of our MOST LOVED photography teams and long time friends, Shay & Olive!! Today we're talking to Hilary, one of the three creative minds behind this Dallas based company!

We met Hillary over 2 years ago at Common Desk back when Celebrate Dallas was just starting out in the wedding world.  She was one of our very first friendors, even photographing our first ever styled shoot in Bishop Arts. Both of our companies have come along way since we first met, adding team members, changing names, and even opening our own studios. We've got a serious love affair with the Shay & Olive team and we know you will too soon :D

Joyful, Collaborative, Philanthropic, Creative, Spontaneous.

How did Shay and Olive start? Who are Shay and Olive?
I studied Fine Art at SMU and during my senior year I started doing wedding and portrait photography. I continued building the business after I graduated and by 2015 I was starting to get overwhelmed-- Working alone was exhausting and lonely! Erica was living in Madrid and Xavier and I took a trip to visit her shortly before she moved back to Dallas. During our visit Erica and I decided that when she moved back to Dallas we would team up!  Xavier had been doing a lot of behind the scenes work from the beginning but in 2016 he joined S&O full time and we became a trio!

When I started the company it was called Hilary Grace Photography-- I was the sole photographer and never imagined growing a team! Once Erica joined we decided to name the company after our dogs. Shay (short for Seamus) is Xavier's and my mutt. Olive is Erica's Old English Sheepdog.

How would you describe your wedding photography styles?
Our style is photojournalistic. We gravitate towards vibrant color and we look to capture authentic emotion.

MOST_LOVED_SHAY_AND_OLIVE.jpg

What are your favorite local hangouts?
Anywhere on Lower Greenville!

MOST_LOVED_SHAY_AND_OLIVE.jpg

Besides wedding photography, tell us about a few of your other creative endeavors.
Xavier loves to host! He runs our community natural light studio called The Lumen Room. The Lumen Room is a bright, white, naturally lit loft that serves as a blank slate for the visions of other photographers, videographers, stylists, etc. We are constantly inspired by what others create in the space!

Erica travels and takes gorgeous photographs of architecture and landscapes. She sells her prints at local markets and on her Etsy shop.

I have a soft spot for animals! I photograph dogs and all of their goofy quirks at Grace and Goose Dog Photography Studio.

Happy Wednesday friends! We've made it halfway through the week and we hope you have fun plans for Memorial Day weekend!

Today we're taking a sneak-peak into this unique Dallas venue, Jefferson Tower Events! The iconic Jefferson Tower in the heart of Oak Cliff has a rich history though the original building has been fully restored to provide modern amenities. The building covers over 4,000 square feet and the interior is decorated with Art Deco details. With services like in-house catering from La Calle Doce and El Ranchito restaurants, floral design, furniture rentals, and his-and-hers private lounges, Jefferson Tower Events has everything a couple could want in their big day!

Although we've not yet had the pleasure of hosting a wedding at this venue (we sure want to!), we did participate in the Swoon Event early this spring here. and it also happens to be local to our studio, The Coterie, in Bishop Arts! Keep scrolling for a look into the venue! Enjoy!
