TOP 5 | SOUTHERN WEDDING TRADITIONS

As a Texas transplant, planning southern weddings came with a whole host of new traditions. The first time I heard of the "House Party," I was beyond confused (but intrigued). But, we dove in headfirst, and now we can get enough of these Down South customs. In today's blog post, we'll be discussing our Top 5 Southern Wedding Traditions, so put on your boots and let's scoot!

Grooms Cake

Traditionally the Groom’s cake a is a smaller more elaborately designed cake gifted to the groom. Although they’re not required, many couples choose to include them in their day as a way to incorporate the grooms personality and unique taste. The cake is also an opportunity to serve a more “basic“ cake flavor like chocolate and would serve as a great boxed favor at the end of the night. We’ve seen them all; footballs, sports logos, even a boat like the cake down below.

Bridals

Bridals are a pre-wedding day photoshoot where the bride can get all done up in her wedding dress to take solo pictures. These pictures can be sweet keepsakes or printed for display on wedding day. These shoots are often scheduled the same day that Brides have their hair and makeup trials so they can get the best bang for their buck. Although this typically centers around the bride, we have seen Bride + Groom. In those cases, the Bride and Groom get together and wear a more relaxed version of their wedding attire. Think no bowtie and hair down.

Bridal Luncheon

I know what you're thinking, another expensive pre-wedding party *eye roll*, but you're wrong, sort of! Bridal luncheons are an opportunity for Brides to celebrate their bridal party like a wedding shower, but for the sweet friends and family members who'll also be walking down the aisle. This party can be held before or after the wedding, so long as it includes those who served or are serving on the brides' side of the wedding, flower girls and all. You can even invite other women who played or will play a large role in your wedding day. People like your aunt, who made the cookie favors, or your nana who helped put together your invitation suite. The gifts for the event don't have to be extravagant; dinner or lunch on you is enough to love on your squad.

Second Line

Wedding Second Lines are fun and ultra festive ways to let the good times roll on your wedding day. Second Lines are a New Orleanian tradition that stems from West African dance circles. As it became a ritual for African Americans, the parades expanded to celebrations of new life and death. In a typical line, the guests, lead by a brass band and the couple follow a parade route whooping, hollering, swinging towels, grooving, and celebrating their newlywed status. This tradition might take a few more steps to set up (if you’re headed out to a public road, you’ll need a parade permit and barricades to keep things safe), but it’s well worth it. If you’re concerned about cultural appropriation, do your research, consult your local black-led jazz band, hire a local black-led jazz band, and ultimately make the decisions that feels the best for you.

Southern Cuisine

If we’re honest, this is our favorite southern tradition of them all. Be it soul food, Tex-Mex, or barbeque; we can’t get enough of the DELICIOUS food. With the right catering team, your wedding food might be more popular and you. Just kidding, you’re the star, but like, make sure you have enough so that we can get seconds.

TOP 5 | DALLAS BRIDAL BOUTIQUES

You've done all your wedding dress research now you're ready to shop, and we're here to help! Today we're revisiting one of our most popular blog posts featuring some of our favorite local bridal boutiques, plus a few new faves. Each of which offers classic, unique, or traditional bridal gown options; your wedding dress dreams are sure to come true. So grab your entourage, your heels, and pop some bubbly; let the dress shopping begin!

BUT, who would we be if we didn't give you a few tips first? Before you get your shop on, make sure you know:

Price Range - Stay firm and realistic.

Style - Use your Pinterest to your advantage! Narrow your preference down 4 or 5 dresses you love for inspiration.

Designers - Having a few favorite designers will help your bridal consultant pinpoint your style. It may also guide your shopping since not all shops carry all designers.

Don't Over Shop - A million different appointments will lead to fatigue (decision and otherwise).

Crew - Keep your entourage to VIPs only.

Opinions - Don't let other's opinions dictate your style. We know it's easier said than done, but it's imperative that what you want comes first.

Movement - Think about the movement of the day. If you can't sit or dance or walk in your dream dress, maybe it's not the right dress for your day.

Take Pictures - Take pictures if you can! This will keep the gorgeousness fresh, and you can look back at them when you're tempted to continue shopping or aren't ready to pull the buying trigger just yet.

Know Your Body - Shop for the body that you have. You may have a big workout plan, but it only adds unnecessary stress and pressure to an already stressful process if you know that one little slip might cost you your perfect fit.

Lean Into Your Style - Don't default to traditional! Your wedding dress doesn't have to white or long or even a dress! You make the rules.

Ask Questions! - Consultants are there to help, so ask away.

  • Do the handle alterations? What's the turnaround?

  • How much is the dress? (Hopefully, your consultant respects your price range, but just in case, make sure you're asking so you don't fall in love with something you can't afford)

  • What are the right undergarments for the dress?

  • Is there a matching veil or accessories?

Stop - Once you find a dress you love, one that you can envision yourself in, STOP SHOPPING! They'll always be more dresses, but you have to pick one. So once you do, quit.

TIPS | FINDING YOUR WEDDING AESTHETIC

The first (or at least the first and most fun) step of your wedding planning is deciding the look of your wedding day. Not only is it exciting to put together, but it’ll live in your wedding pictures forever. When deciding on your oh so important wedding aesthetic, there are tons of things to consider and we’ve rounded up a few for you plus tips on how to keep your vision organized. Let the designing begin!

Brainstorm

Sit down with your boo or BFFs and talk about how you'd always envisioned your big day. Though those plans might have to be scaled down or re-worked to make them realistic, they are a good jumping off point.

Pinterest

Consult your Pinterest, but make sure it’s not just a bunch of pretty pictures. Now that Pinterest allows you to make subcategories, your running wedding board may benefit from some reorganization (especially if this is something you plan to show vendors in the future).

Quick Tip: Think about making a fresh wedding and creating sub-boards for:

  • Dress/Bridal Beauty

  • Bridesmaids (gifts, beauty)

  • Groom/Groomsmen

  • Guests (paper, favors, welcome)

  • Food and Drinks (reception, cocktail hour)

  • Decor

  • Shot List

After you’re done, go through your old wedding board and move only your very favorite pins to the new board and delete the rest.

Color Palette

Play with color palettes! Color (or lack thereof) can set the tone of your wedding day and your design aesthetic. Bold is in, but may need some experimentation to get right.

Theme

Looking to over the top with your wedding day aesthetic? Consider a theme. There are never ending options, and no doubt your look will be unforgettable.

Talk It Out

Ask yourself (and your spouse the big questions)! Do you want your wedding to be:

  • Modern or Traditional?

  • Big or small?

  • Daytime or nighttime?

These will all help to give you a clearer picture of your wedding day.

Consider What You Already Know

Decisions you’ve already made may also sway your wedding style.

Venue: Barns and outdoor venues lend themselves to a more rustic or boho look, while banquet halls and luxe hotels tend to be more classically styled.

Season: The season may also play a role in your overall decor. Winter Wonderland and Autumnal Coziness have very different vibes (and if you even care) you can incorporate them into your event design.

Creating a wedding day style is many bride’s favorite parts of the wedding planning process. Putting together mood boards and thinking up color schemes to fit your aesthetic and unique sense of style is exciting. But, one of the biggest parts of your wedding day aesthetic is you! Your dress, hair, and even accessories will come together to create create a look you love and your wedding makeup will be the icing on that oh so fabulous cake.

Although this is one of the more fun to-do’s on your list, it can be a little daunting to choose a bridal makeup look you love, and there’s certainly no shortage of makeup styles out there. There are a few things that might help you decide:

  • What season are you getting married? Fall and Winter weddings typically feature darker lip and eye shadow colors.

  • What’s your wedding venue? Outdoor or Beach weddings tend to lean more neutral glam.

  • What kind of dress are you wearing? Classic, princess gowns pair nicely with blushy cheeks and pink/berry-toned lips.

  • Or do something totally out of the box, it’s your wedding!

To make your bridal style search a little easier, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite Celebrate Dallas brides and their gorgeous wedding day makeup looks, plus five tips to make sure your look goes off without a hitch. Let the glam begin!

PRO TIP: Skin First

Your skin is the foundation of every look, so skin prep is crucial. Make sure that you’re using the best moisturizers and primers for your skin type and skin concerns. That being said, try to give your self time try new skincare products and treatments. We’d advise not to try anything new the week or two before your wedding, so you can avoid any adverse reactions you’ll have to cover.

PRO TIP: Trial Runs are Essential

Whether you’re doing your makeup yourself or hiring a makeup artist for you wedding day, trial runs are a must. New products may irritate your skin or be a bad color match so it’s best to make sure you can do a long wear test of the look before your wedding so you know that it’s foolproof. You also want to make sure you feel comfortable in your wedding day makeup style, especially if it’s something new or different than your usual style. Smokey eyes are gorgeous, but if you’ve never tried one before you may be overwhelmed wearing one on the photographed day of your life.

PRO TIP: Bring Backup

No matter how long lasting your makeup is, your wedding day will really put it through the ringer, but there’s a fix for that! Keep an emergency kit packed with blotting sheets, the lipstick, lash glue, makeup wipes, and setting powder for easy access. Fingers crossed you won’t need, but you don’t want to be caught without it. And if you’re willing to pay a little more, many makeup artists will charge an hourly rate to stick around to

PRO TIP: Make sure you’re waterproofed.

Tears and sweat happen, so make sure you’re prepared! The makeup market is flooded with waterproof mascaras and face powders you should consider picking up. You’ll most definitely break a sweat, that’s a given so plan for that. But, even if you’re not typically a crier do yourself a favor and invest in a good waterproof. It’ll be a pain to get off later that night, which is a gift and curse.

PRO TIP: More is more…sort of.

Makeup photographs differently than it looks in person. That mean that even all done up, pictures may not do your makeup look justice. Taking that into consideration, it may be in your best interest to go a little heavier than you typically would. Of course, if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, then don’t do it. This is your day you should feel your best and most confident!
